Letter from Wendy 11/21/09

Seventh Email...

Hey Casey, I can only type for a minute. I got some bad news from the doctor yesterday and I am still reeling. We are starting back over at the beginning and it makes me sick to think about it. I can't look at my boys without crying. God has gotten me through so much, and I feel selfish asking Him for more. I really have so much to do to get ready for this. I have to prepare as much as a person can prepare for something like this.
I am so glad Carli is getting on so well with you. You can't think too much about the past and mistakes you've made where she's concerned. That doesn't help you or her. What you do is enjoy her, and let her enjoy you. Kids are resilient. God made them that way. You are her mommy and she loves you unconditionally just the way you love her. I thank God that she is back with you where she can catch up on all the hugs and kisses she ever wanted, and where you can teach her about Jesus's love for her. I also thank God for the change in your mom and your relationship with her. I know how life-changing the mother/daughter bond can be and I'm glad you've found that. I'm glad for your mom, too. I'm sure it has meant just as much to her.
I still pray for you guys and I still look forward to seeing you at Christmas time. FaceBook kind of got put on hold this week because of the new developments with the doctor. I will get to it soon hopefully. I'm spending a lot of time scared to death and praying and crying. These holidays are going to be so special and so sad all at the same time. I'll type more soon when I can.
Love,Wendy

Sixth Email...

Hey Case, I'm sorry it's been so long. I always have good intentions about keeping up with e-mail, then before I know it it's been a whole week! I have been praying for Haley, Junior and his wife, and for your first week with Carli. I am dying to know how it is going. Is she all enrolled in her new school? How is she adjusting to all the changes? How is Candess adjusting to not being the only kid? I hope your trip went well and everyone was safe. I think I have decided to set up a Facebook account. I am a little nervous about it. I am not all that technologically inclined, so I'm having Chris help me. We may do it as a family account so everyone we know can just see pics and contact us that way. Anyway, he's really busy so when we get it up and running I'll let you know. I'm most excited about being able to look at other people's accounts. I could not view your pictures without having an account of my own. Now I will.
I am officially well again. I am off all the pain meds, and other temporary stuff they had me on during recovery. I am driving all over the place now, although I am currently in the market for a new vehicle since my pick-up truck is a little hard for me to handle now. Please pray that we will find just the right deal and God will have His hand on the transaction so it goes smoothly. I am alone at the house with the boys now while Chris is at work - no more Wendy-sitters! I even did some ministry stuff for the church this week, that felt good. I am slowly getting back into housework routines - cooking, ironing, making beds, etc. Don't get me wrong, I am still very sore and tired by the end of the day, but the feeling of being normal again outweighs the pain. I am less scared about living life now. The more I do the more I feel like I can do. The depression is gone. It has been a couple of weeks now since my last good cry. All in all I feel really wonderful. God is so good. You have really helped encourage me to this point.
I told my mom and Chris all about your e-mails and about how you are coming to see me this Christmas time. They are both so amazed and happy that you are doing so well. I think Chris may ask you to give his information to Junior soon. I don't know for sure, but when I talk about you I can tell it gets him thinking about him. I think it just makes him sad that Junior is so lost. He is a little worried about going down that road again though, so it may be awhile before he's ready.
E-mail back soon and tell me all about your week with Carli. I will still be praying for you guys, and soon I'll be able to see pictures on Facebook! Ethan is waiting to use the computer, so I'd better go. He said, "Mommy, I NEED to play my PBS kids games! Please, please please?" How can I say no to that? Talk to you soon. Love you.

Fifth Email...

I can't type long because I have to get some rest. Big couple of days! I drove yesterday and today for the first time, and it surprised me how much it hurt! Who knew? I understand now why they had me wait 8 weeks. Also, I picked up my baby and carried him! So I am really sore and tired. I wanted to reply though, because I get so excited when my prayers are answered so specifically. I'm not saying things happen just because I pray for them, I know you and several other people are also praying for the same things but it is still exciting to me. First of all I prayed long ago for yours and Lonnie's financial condition. At the time that was the only real complaint you had about your life in general, so I prayed for God to lessen that burden. Now He has! Then this week I have prayed about Carli coming to live with you and how as a mother I really hurt to see mother and daughter without each other, and now look, she is coming home! Oh God is awesome, and I really love hearing all your happy news. Now I will pray for Candess and her allergies.
I got so excited when you said you were coming down to Texas for Christmas and I secretly wondered if I could ask you to come see me, and then I read on and you are! I mean goodness, if I get any more good news I'll not know what to do with myself. I am really looking forward to a visit from you. I will meet you somewhere if you need me to, or you are welcome to come to my house. You just let me know. I won't take a lot of your time, cause I know you have a lot of family to see, but I would love to see you guys.
I'll type more later. I'm sorry I run out of steam so quickly. I have to tell you about our busy week. Maybe tomorrow I'll feel like sitting up more. Talk to you then...

Fourth Email...

Casey please don't ever think you're rambling to me! I have so enjoyed your e-mails and I thank you for being patient with me about the facebook thing and indulging my need for e-mails instead. I know it is more difficult, but I appreciate it. I may come around after all and get on facebook. I'm still thinking it over.
First of all, I want to say it really shows in your writing how much you've grown in the Lord. I am impressed by your spiritual maturity and your expression of it. It really touches my heart to hear you enjoying your relationship with Jesus SO much! I have been so down lately, and your uplifting e-mail to me reminding me of God's love and strength, and also that I am taking away other's blessings when I don't allow them to help me, was exactly what I needed. I mean exactly. You are right. I would want to help someone in my situation not because I want recognition or accolades from them, but I would do it out of obedience to God. So when people come here it is because God sent them and who am I to question or reject God? Since I read that I have tried to have a new attitude about it and it has helped. I know it won't be forever, and I also know that I could never do this on my own. So I should just enjoy the help, and the company, while I can and try to honor God in the process. That, after all, is my number one priority in life now. To honor God in all I do. Whining about how miserable and sad I am certainly does not do that. I am sorry. I really am finding joy in the situation now believe it or not. Anyway, you really are a blessing and I am overjoyed at the changes I see in you. Also that I have you back as a friend. I didn't realize how much I'd missed talking to you. I've known you longer than any of my other friends and have shared more with you. It is nice to have someone who "knew me when..." to keep me reminded of how far God has brought me.
I would love if you would share your humbling experience with me when you are ready. You mentioned it before, and I really want to hear your testimony. Again, I love hearing about you and what's been going on all these years. I don't get out of the house much, so sometimes e-mail is my link to the adult world. Your last e-mail about the girls was great. I have wondered about them, and prayed for them, and it is nice to hear details about their little lives. Since they were little I have written all of your birthdays on my calendar every year. My mom asked me once why, since we had lost touch and hadn't spoken in quite awhile, did I still keep track of the dates. I told her it is because when I pass by the calendar and see one of your names written there it reminds me to pray for you. I prayed for you and those girls even when we weren't keeping up with each other. I didn't, and still don't, know all of what went on in your life, but I prayed for you just the same.
That is great news about Carli! I will certainly pray with you. I know you don't want to get your hopes up, but I am excited for you. I know as a mother it is killing you not being with them every day. I was only away from my babies for two weeks and thought I'd die from missing them. My boys are the best part of me. You said you wanted to know about them, so I'll tell you. When I was pregnant with Ethan God told me He had a big purpose for that little boy. When he was an infant, I could feel the angels all around him when I'd hold him. I could see in his eyes that he had recently been WITH GOD, and he could remember! He was such a peaceful baby, and I could just tell somehow that he came straight from God's arms to mine and he knew it. Since then he has grown into a smart and polite little man. He worries about people and prays the sweetest prayers about things I sometimes didn't even know he was thinking. The moment I became a mom I knew it was exactly what God had intended for me to be. It is the most important job He has ever given me. As a woman I feel so lucky that God put me here to support and take care of three of His Christian men so they can do great things for Him.
As for Elijah, my experience with him has been so different from Ethan's. Not worse, just different. I can't hold him much, and I am busy recovering so we are still getting to know each other. We are just starting to bond and I really think he knows I am his mommy now. I waited when I was pregnant for God to give me a message about him like He did with Ethan, but one never came. Then, the day after I had him, 12 hours before the world fell apart, a phone call came to the hospital room. I was holding him and Chris answered the phone and a lady from our church who we know but only on a casual basis told him a strange thing. She asked Chris to forgive her for being so bold and said she knew she sounded crazy, but that morning she had been talking to God about us and our new baby and praying for us to be well, and God told her that "He has a big purpose for this new little boy", and for us not to worry, that everything would be just fine. She didn't know what that meant, and neither did we. I just cried because those were the exact words God had said to me when I was pregnant with Ethan. I KNEW her message had to be straight from God! How could she know those words? But what did God mean, "everything would be just fine"? Well, later that night when I was being prepped for heart surgery Kathy's words from God came rushing back to me. Chris too. Chris told the whole waiting room full of family, friends, and church members that story about Kathy's phone call and how God said everything would be fine and he expected everyone there to keep that in mind. He was so strong and never lost faith that I would be okay, and I think that message from God was why. Anyway, we know now that my heart would have failed even if I didn't have a baby, but the fact that I did just have a baby and was in the hospital already when it did fail, in the Heart Institute no less, I was able to survive it. Aortic dissections are often fatal and several doctors have said had I not been IN the hospital when it happened I would have surely died. So Elijah saved my life. That's his big purpose, and I am forever grateful to him for that.
Anyway, now I am rambling! Please keep me posted about the Carli situation and I will keep you all in my prayers. Also, let me know what comes of your visit to the church you told me about. Type back when you can.
Love,Wendy

Third Email...

I love hearing you talk about the Lord! I can really see Him working through you, and it makes me so happy. I bet your life has truly been turned around and filled with joy. I will check out your blog, and of course I don't mind you using my e-mails. I don't know how inspiring I am, but anything to further the cause for God. You have to tell me all about the church you guys visit. I will be praying that it is a perfect fit for you all, and that you form bonds there that will last forever. Don't worry about not calling. I am not much to talk to lately. I am battling daily depression. Not to the point of medication, and I don't have harmful thoughts or anything like that, I am just down and I cry a lot. I suppose it's a double whammy with the post-pardum hormones and life-changing surgery and not being able to do anything but sit around and watch other people raise my kids. It will pass. The doctors and the internet support groups all say it is normal and should only last a few months. It is weird for me though, because I am not a depressed kind of person. I feel more and more normal every day, both physically and mentally, so hopefully this whole thing will be behind me soon. I do appreciate your prayers. You have no idea how much it makes a heart feel good knowing someone is on their knees for YOU! It really helps knowing that, and God has really taken care of me. I pray a lot for you, too. I am just so happy when I think of the changes in your life and what God has done in you. Thank you for sharing that with me. I love your positive spirit, I need more of that. As for the boys, Elijah is in his 4th set of casts on his legs for his clubbed feet. I hate them, but he doesn't seem to mind them. Hopefully they'll be done in about 6 weeks. Ethan is having some trouble dealing with all the changes in me. He worries so much (like his daddy) and I hate to see him doing that. Chris is still wonderful. He has been back at work for a few weeks and we are having people take shifts sitting with me and the kids which I also hate. It's the best we can do though.
I am sorry to be such a downer! I just read back over this whole thing and you must be sorry you asked how I am doing! I will take a cue from you and try to be more up-beat. I love hearing from you, and I will try to be more prompt with my replies from now on. I'll type more soon.

Second Email...

I won't be able to type for very long, and I'm sorry for that. Your e-mails mean so much, as do your prayers. I am feeling a little stronger each day. The doctors are optimistic about my recovery. It is just slow going, and for an independent girl like me that's especially hard. I know Aron's birthday has to be a hard day for you every year. I will pray for you and your mom and dad. I can't imagine how that is. You want to just call him, or send a card, and you can't. I am so sorry.
Our little Elijah is doing well. He is a formula baby, which we didn't plan but with my surgery and hospital stay and new medications breastfeeding was not an option. So we are adjusting to the spitting up, gas, diaper rash, and constipation that comes with that. Ethan was breastfed so we never had to deal with any of that. I am still not able to do much but look at him, but Chris does a great job of taking care of him. Ethan is a wonderful big brother.
I find that my priorities have changed a lot since my little experience. Every day I appreciate new things that didn't seem to matter before. It has been humbling having to ask for help with EVERYTHING, but I think maybe that's the lesson God has for me in all of this. Also each day, God shows me His hand on this whole situation. Every day. It never fails. A phone call, e-mail, card, visitor, or whatever will show up at just the time when I'm feeling sorry for myself or I'm getting frustrated, and it reminds me that God is loving me through this. Chris prays with me daily, and as a woman I never realized how important and necessary that is. To have a man love Christ and pray for you and with you strengthens everything in a marriage and a household. He has been my rock, and I am so thankful to have him.
Your prayers and well-wishes really help me a lot. You can call me if you want to, it would be a welcome break from the monotony of recovery in bed. I'll include my address and stuff, and I gave Chris your phone numbers in case he needs them. Thank you again for thinking of me.
Love, Wendy

First Email...

Well it has been a long road, with still a long road ahead. I had the baby on [September] the 9th as planned, and all went well with that. He is healthy and happy, weighing in at 7 lbs. 13 oz. and 19 inches long. God allowed me 24 hours to enjoy him and breathe him in before I had a heart attack the night of the 10th and was rushed into emergency open heart surgery. My aorta dissected spontaneously due to the genetic illness I've known about for years. Surgery lasted about 6 hours, then I spent 4 days in the cardiac intensive care unit on life support. I partially regained consciousness on Saturday morning, but don't remember much. They removed the breathing machine and thus began my long recovery. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks, and could only see my boys twice. I'm home now, but I still have a long way to go. I hurt a lot, and there are many adjustments to be made with a lot of new limitations. I can't pick up the baby so Chris and my mom as well as various church members are taking turns sitting with me at home. I am scared a lot, too. Every new ache or pain brings a new panic over what it could be wrong. Most of all I feel blessed. I prayed harder than I've ever prayed before the night of surgery, and God allowed me a second chance with my family. I hope I am worthy, and I hope I honor God with all that I do with this second chance. Please pray for all of us, as this is hard on everyone involved. Especially Chris. He has been wonderful. He has seen and done things for me that no husband should ever have to do for a wife. He really is my best friend and I don't know what I would do without him.

Love,
Wendy
